1. Welcome to Clever ICTs in ACE

This site has been created to showcase the work of 18 Adult Commuity Education (ACE) organisations across Victoria, who trialled various blended learning models as part of the AccessACE and LearnScope projects funded in 2007.
Adult Community Education is available in nearly 400 community based adult education organisations throughout Victoria. These ACE organisations are often in areas where they are the only access point for adults for learning and in many more communities provide access to a mixture of services. ACE providers are a significant resource for adult learners in regional areas, with 46% of ACE learners living in regional and rural Victoria. It's success rests in its ability to provide accessible and appropriate adult education to reach people who might otherwise miss out.

The ACE sector is important to the achievement of the state and national skills agenda by providing a means to encourage people to take part in education and training, and ensuring that learning provides new opportunities for people with no or low level qualifications. It was within this broader context that the Adult Commuity and Further Education Board funded the AccessACE project, to investigate how tecnology could further support and extend the learning needs of communities across Victoria.

Each particiapting organisation demonstrated a clever use of ICTs (Information Communications Technologies) in working with a particular learner group in their community. They demonstrate that you do not have to take giant leaps- small steps and manageable chunks is the strategy that worked best. What they all agree on is that it is imperative to get started- jump in is a term that was often used.

The trials conducted by the teachers aimed to answer two research questions posed by the AccessACE research team:
  • What does clever use if ICTs in ACE mean and look like?
  • What could clever use of ICTs in ACE mean and look like?

This site will give you detailed information about how each centre designed, developed and delivered their trial and provides information to both managers and teachers who are intertested in implementing practical, do-able and useful e-learning initiatives into established courses.


2. What is blended learning?


blendedlearning.jpgFor projects involved in AccessACE, blended learning meant a clever use of ICTs that supported, extended and enhanced current ACE delivery. For some this meant a fully online course using a virtual classroom, others used a learner managment system such as TAFE VC whilst the majority supported their delivery with web 2.0 tools such as blogs, wikis, online slideshows, podcasts, etc...

3. What is AccessACE?

This research project investigated the role of Information Communications Technology (ICT) enabled delivery as part of a blended teaching and learning strategy that can increase participation by learners in Adult Community Education and training.
The aim of the project was to stimulate the uptake of blended delivery models which would offer ACE providers the capacity to deliver a greater variety of programs to individuals and small groups in a supportive and highly flexible manner.
It builds on current and previous initiatives and supports managers and teachers in making informed decisions about tools and technologies available to them in the delivery of their courses. it also aims to support sustainable models of blended delivery that encourage flexibility and accessibility for ACFE Board priority learner groups in ACE across Victoria.


4. Participating organisations' action plans


Ten organisations participated in the AccessACE project
Each organisation developed an action plan that provides valuable information about their learner group, methodology, outcomes and lessons learned.
Each action plan is focussed around a particular action research question, which focussed their planning and delivery and provides invaluable practical information to other ACE organisations who want to explore the potential of a blend of ICT enabled teaching and learning. All the action research questions are listed below, together with a summary statement about the project as a catalyst for change within the organisation.

What is a wiki?

This website is a wiki. A wilki is an editable web page, and allows for co-construction of content, and collaboration through discussion.
This site brings together a series of independent wikis, similar but different. These wikis (as listed in the action plans section in number 6 above) were established during the course of the project in 2007, and have all been brought together under this private label wikispace you are now visiting.
